“I love money—its emptiness as mere numbers, its lack of inherent meaning, its untouchableness, its impossibility of being truly possessed. Through this very emptiness, money permeates almost everything: objects, time, actions, and experiences, both tangible and intangible. It flows everywhere, indifferent to notions of good or evil. In this way, its indiscriminate nature and connectedness recall that of the natural world—and of love. Now that money has become almost pure abstraction, how do we sense the movements of numbers? Just as we may embrace the changing processes of nature, might we also behold the changing flows and movements of numbers?”

This workshop explores the sensations that arise when the numbers in your account move together with those of others. How does having one differ from having two? What difference does a single digit make compared with ten digits? Can you, even briefly, hold a number so large you have never possessed it before? What would it mean to give all of it to the person beside you? Can we all, if only for a moment, become zero? Between zero and infinity, can we breathe, move, and discover new ways of relating to numbers—or perhaps even be free from them all?

The Sense of Numbers

Kim Boyong

Kim Boyong is an artist based in Seoul. Through his practice, he takes an interest in presence, the hidden, the unspeakable, the inner stage and the possibility of sharing the ineffable. Art’s often linear relation to value and capitalism is in Kim Boyong’s work complexified through the engagement with spirituality and nothingness, exploring alternative ecologies of mental, social and environmental relations. Seeing without seeing, experiencing without images, being without representation is in Kim Boyong’s work, opening up for questions around transindividual life, simultaneously a dark body and a porous being connected and together.
