Sounds unfold as extensions in time: we listen, but they also expand concentrically into a landscape where the listener can dwell, contemplate, and dream. A concert can trace a path drawn by sound, or weave a texture of impressions that allows us to breathe.
Seoul-based Korean experimental musician and improviser Joyul uses the daxophone and electronics to immerse the listener in sonic environments that are at once mystical—like radiant forests—and viscerally immediate, like a car crash in rush-hour traffic.
In the context of the Ob/scene Festival, Joyul presents a performance in the form of a concert: a listening experience that is both a bodily manifestation of sound and an architecture of transforming reverberations.
Joyul is a musician and improviser based in Seoul. She focuses on the potential of fragments that emerge in the process where sound, language, and the world come into relation, creating spaces in which they can be situated. As a daxophone improviser, she observes the scene of the body carrying out the sound, and the instrument as an extended body, are occupying the time and space of the live performance. Next to concerts and live performances Joyul released “Earwitness” in 2021.
